Start/Stop/Transfer Service

Whether you are establishing new service, transferring your service to a different location, or terminating existing service, the BMU staff work to make the process smooth and effortless.

APPLY ONLINE

To establish a new residential, commercial, or industrial customer account, visit our lobby at 212 Chestnut Street or use the link above to apply online. Please allow at least two working days prior to the date you want service to begin. Service will not be turned on during a weekend or holiday.

To establish new service, you will need the following information and documents: 

  • Copy of the photo ID of all persons listed on the account.
  • Social security number of everyone listed on the account.
  • The date you want service to begin.  
  • Your service address, including apartment, lot, or unit number. 
  • Renters – A copy of your current lease or written statement from landlord. The account holder’s name must be listed on the lease
  • Southern Madison Water District (SMWD) – those sewer customers whose water is provided by SMWD must provide a receipt showing that water service with SMWD has been established. Note: water service must be established prior to establishing sewer service. 

Security Deposits

Security deposits are required for all new service. Security deposits can be made in person or online. It may take up to 24 hours after submitting your application before you will be able to access your new account online in order to pay your deposit. Deposits can be made in person at any time. Unfortunately, phone payments for deposits are not available at this time. Failure to pay the security deposit may result in discontinued service.

As a new customer, your required security deposit will depend on what services BMU will be providing. The deposit fees for residential customers are as follows:

Electric – $150

Water – $50

Sewer – $40 for BMU water customers

Sewer – $60 for Southern Madison Water District water customers

Deposit amounts for commercial or industrial customers are calculated based on two (2) times the estimated average monthly bill. Please contact a customer service representative at 859-986-4391 to discuss deposit totals for your commercial or industrial account.

TRANSFER SERVICE ONLINE

If you are currently a BMU residential customer and are moving to another address within our service area, you may transfer your service online by using the link above or by visiting our lobby at 212 Chestnut Street.

Please allow at least two working days prior to the date you want service to begin. Service will not be turned on during a weekend or holiday.

To transfer existing service, you will need the following information and documents: 

  • Copy of the photo ID of all persons listed on the new account.
  • Social security number of everyone listed on the account.
  • Physical address (where do you need service turned off)
  • Date service should be turned off (must be within 10 days of starting new service)
  • Physical address (where do you need service turned on)
  • Date service should be turned on
  • Mailing address (if different from the physical address)
  • Spouse / roommate information
  • Renters – A copy of your current lease or written statement from landlord for the new location. The account holders name must be listed on the lease
  • Homeowners – Settlement statement received at closing or sales contract for the new location.
  • Southern Madison Water District (SMWD) – those sewer customers whose water is provided by SMWD must provide a receipt showing that water service with SMWD has been established. Note: water service must be established prior to establishing sewer service. 

Security Deposits

If you have a security deposit on the account you are transferring from, the deposit will be transferred to your new account. However, if you are adding services, additional security deposits will be required.

If you are transferring to a location with that requires fewer BMU services and have a deposit on the old account, the deposit will be transferred to the new account for the new services and the remainder will be applied to the final bill or refunded. 

If you are moving out of the BMU area and need to close your account you can do so by calling our office at 859-986-4391, or by visiting our lobby at 212 Chestnut Street.

To terminate existing service, you will need the following information and documents: 

  • Name of the customer as stated on the bill
  • Social security number of primary account holder.
  • Physical address (where do you need service turned off)
  • Date service should be turned off (service will not will not be disconnected during a weekend or holiday)
  • Forwarding address for final bill and/or deposit refund

If there is a security deposit on the account, it will be applied to the final bill, with the remainder refunded to the primary account holder. If the final bill amount exceeds the deposit, the final bill will be mailed to the forwarding address.
